The Uniform Mediation Act (UMA) was adopted by Ohio and is effective as of Oct. 29, 2005. The UMA reflects the growth of and changes within the mediation field over the past two decades and is much more comprehensive than the Ohio statute it replaces. The UMA impacts mediation in a wide range of contexts, from court-annexed programs to community mediation to proceedings by private contract. It is therefore essential that mediators, mediation parties, attorneys and judges understand its
implications.
